Physical Characteristics :

The Municiaplity has an aggregate area of 17,325 hectares of land distributed among the twenty six (26) barangays.It used to be a large municipality. With the creation of daughter Municipality of Kumalarang and Lakewood the Municipality become like a residue.


 Topography :

The town reveals that the whole area is characterized by rolling hills, steep and high mountain ranges. These are transverse by wide rivers and creeks. These are Lapuyan River, crossing right through the center of the town emanating from Lake Palace, Maruing River located Northwest of the municipality, Timasok River coming from Lake Dasay located on the South side of the town, Dumanquillas and the Canon River , among these rivers Lapuyan River is the widest.


Literary level, almost seventy percent of the inhabitants have attended formal education and could at least read and write. In fact a unique condition presently exist in the area, the town is dubbed as the “ Little America” of the Province of Zamboanga del Sur. This is because majority of the older generation even those residing in the hinterland most part of the town speak English even if some could only affix their thumbmark in place of their signature. Analysis of the literary status of the town revealed that approximately sixty one ( 61% ) percent of the population have had at least an elementary education, while seven percent have reached high school and only two percent of the population have attended college education. In term of participation more than fifty two (52%) percent of those who had elementary and secondary education were males. However, in the tertiary level of education attainment, the females exceeded the males by more than twelve percent (12%). Those data revealed that in the hierarchy of educational attainment, especially in the plunge areas, the males often leave or fall-out of school earlier to help their parents in their farm and to support their siblings.


Religious Affiliation, approximately eighty five (85%) percent of the population are members of the protestant faith, twelve percent (12%) are Roman Catholics, and three percent ( 3% ) are Islam, this facts may be attributed to the settings of protestant missionaries in the area during the early part of the twentieth century, which accounted for the conversion of a large segment of the Subanen to the Christian and Missionary Alliance Churches of the Philippines.
